LIBRARY NEWS

TIS THE SEASON TO READ!

library_news

A big THANK YOU goes out to all parents, students and teachers that supported our recent Scholastic Book Fair! What a great way to have celebrated reading and raise funds for our school library. The theme To The Book Fair and Beyond kept the excitement building as we transformed the library into an intergalactic showcase for books! Students were fascinated by the extraordinary spaceship that hovered above the library circulation desk all week. Plus the guessing game was quite challenging as students were put to the test to figure out how many stars could possibly fit into the Space Odyssey Jar for daily Book Fair gift certificates. This fun-filled event could not be accomplished without our devoted All Saints families that graciously volunteered to make the Book Fair a huge success. Your generosity enabled the profits from the Book Fair sales to exceed over $12,000 earning the library $3,000 to spend on books and special school programs.

ACCELERATED READER

GO FOR THE GOLD!!! GET READY TO READ!!

The library is incorporating again this year an optional reading program for students in 2nd  - 8th grades who want to become a Gold Medal Reader per quarter. The point system is set up through the Accelerated Reader computer program that will track points based on the number of AR quizzes successfully passed. Each grade has a different point structure to achieve Gold Medal Reader status. Please see the Accelerated Reader link for a better understanding of how the AR program is managed through the library, also current AR title listings can be accessed by clicking on the Library Download link.

Points required to be a Gold Medal Reader:
2nd grade-10 points
3rd grade- 15 points
4th grade- 20 points
5th grade- 30 points
6th-8th 40 points

What is the Accelerated Reader Program?

The Accelerated Reader Program is a computerized reading enrichment program that combines great children’s literature with computer skills. Students will read a book and then take a computer quiz that is given in a multiple choice format. As an individualized reading program, it is designed to motivate students to read more.

How does a student get started?

A students target reading level is usually determined by grade level. For example, a student in 3rd grade would have a typical reading range between 3.0 – 3.9. However, students read at different levels and there reading or book range can be adjusted.

What grades take AR quizzes?

Students in grades 2nd through 8th are encouraged to take AR quizzes. It is important that a student can independently read the book and operate the AR computer program to answer a series of multiple choice questions.

How does a student select an AR book?

The Goal is to motivate students to read more and to enrich their reading experiences. Along with the reading level is a point value. The point value is usually determined by the length of the book, while the reading level is associated with the vocabulary. There are books that are 4.0 reading level worth 1 point and some that are the same reading level worth 9 points. It is a combination that the AR organization establishes.

How many questions are on an AR quiz?

The number of questions will be influenced by the difficulty of the book level. Normally quizzes will have 5, 10 or 20 questions.

What is considered a good AR score?

The objective is to score at 80% or above on the AR quizzes. Scoring lower may indicate that the material is too difficult, and the student should select a book at the lower end of their reading level. A student that scores at 95% or above at the upper end of their reading level, may need to adjust their reading range higher.

When can students take AR quizzes?

Students may take the AR quizzes during their weekly library class or during recess Tuesday through Thursday. Also, Book Fair Week the library is closed for book checkout and AR quizzes.

What are the AR requirements?

The AR program requirements are set up independently by each teacher.

How does the library facilitate the AR program?

There are 15 wireless laptops that have the AR program loaded with over 2,500 quizzes. Also, the Gold Medal Reader program is an optional reading incentive that tracks students AR points. Also, there is an AR Title and AR Book Level listing on the school website.

Does every book have an AR quiz?

No, not every book title has an AR quiz. Also, many books that are in the library do not have quizzes. There are over 2,500 AR quizzes that match the All Saints library selection and the AR quiz list is updated throughout the year.

If a student fails an AR quiz, can the test be taken again?

No, once a student takes an AR quiz he/she can never re-take the quiz…regardless if they passed or failed the quiz. The AR program tracks the students history of quizzes taken and the data is stored.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Dear Rising 5th & 6th Grade Students and Parents,

As many of you know, Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading program that is open to 5th and 6th grade students in schools throughout the Diocese of Arlington.  The All Saints School group will meet next year every Monday after school. An assigned book is discussed in detail weekly and usually we try to review two books a month.  There are 16 books on this year’s list representing different genres of literature.  In May, the diocesan meet takes place, where each school is represented by a team of five students.

This reading list is given out now to interested students so that they can read a few of the books over the summer.  The first books to be discussed when the program resumes in September are the Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer Holm and Danger Box by Blue Balliett. The following month in October, we will review A View from Saturday by E. L. Konigsberg and On the Blue Comet by Rosemary Wells.

Although the Battleof the Books program is challenging, it is also fun for students who enjoy reading books and competition.  We hope to see you in September!  Have a great summer and take time to read a couple of books.

CHECK OUT THE ALL SAINTS LIBRARY ONLINE!

During the summer, thanks to the generous contribution of the PTO, the All Saints Media Center implemented new resource management software called Destiny Library. Destiny gives the school an Internet-based approach to searching for books as well as finding additional resources for students. The All Saints school community can remotely access the school library collection 24/7 from any computer with an Internet connection. This year students will be learning to utilize Destiny Quest, Title Peek, WebPath Express and One Search. The new system is geared to appeal to the 21st century learner!
