Summary of the School Survey on Bullying

Posted Wednesday, March 12, 2008

1. This summary sheet is attached to the School Survey Results. The School Survey Results break out the responses provided by the parents to each question on the survey. Teachers will also be provided a separate grade level summary. Using these documents, our staff can specifically see the feedback provided by parents on the number of reported bullying instances. We can also gauge how our parents believe our staff handles bullying problems within our school.

2. Background information:

  • There were 213 surveys returned, which equals 66.5% of the families and 41.4% of the students. We have approximately 320 families and 512 students in our school. There were some indications that some families prepared a single survey for multiple children, which has the potential to effect individual class results and or male/female results.
  • 86% of parents indicate their child “always” feel safe in the school; 12% reported their child “often” feel safe in the school, 2% reported their child “sometimes” felt safe in the school and 0% reported “Never” feeling safe.
  • Verbal bullying had the highest reported rates, with 42% of parents reporting some level of bullying. Social bullying had the second highest rate, with 31% reporting some level of bullying. Physical bullying was reported by 21% of parents. Boys had higher rates of physical bullying, while girls had higher rates of social bullying. Verbal bullying was reported about equally between boys and girls. See individual class reports for specifics details.
3. The following places were identified by Parents as the locations where bullying occurs most frequently. See individual class reports for specific details.
  • Playground - 49% of parents of male students reported bullying occurring on the playground; 56% of parents of female students reported bullying occurring on the playground.
  • Lunchroom – 20% of parents of male students reported bullying occurring in the lunchroom; 33% of parents of female students reported bullying occurring in the lunchroom.
  • Classroom – 18% of the parents of male students reported bullying occurring in the classroom; 31% of the parents of female students reported bullying occurring in the classroom.
4. How effective is the staff in dealing with bullying?

  • 60% of the parents rated our school as “Very Good” our efforts to make the school a safe place. 37% rated our efforts as Good. 3% rated our efforts as Poor. No one rated our efforts as Very Poor.
  • Parents’ response to these questions were varied as to how the staff and faculty address these issue.

5. Conclusions // What else can we do about bullying incidents in our school?

  • Based on the survey results, the majority of responders felt that their children were safe in the school.
  • Based on the survey results, parents are concerned about bullying in our school. Although a very small percent encounter ongoing incidents of bullying – a larger percent have experienced the issue once or twice during their enrollment.
  • Based on the survey results, we have room to improve our ways of handling incidents of bullying.
  • As a school community, we need to be aware of incidents in the school population and address them as they arise.
  • As a school community we need to be vigilant in monitoring children.
  • As a school community we need to report all incidents of bullying to the appropriate personnel.
  • As a school community we should continue to educate the faculty, staff and children about bullying.
  • As a school community we need to continue to educate our population about our discipline policies.
